Debbi Knowles – DJK Interiors
Interior Finishing – A fresh approach to home improvements and interior styling
“The idea of free business support, advice and mentoring seemed to be exactly the thing I needed to help me answer some of those questions”

Originally from a creative background Debbi studied Interior Design at Huddersfield University. After graduating and spending some time working in the interior design industry, she gravitated to the bright lights of the Capital. Debbi spent 7 years in London and for a time stepped away from the design world and worked for the BBC at Television Centre.
Debbi takes up the story in her own words: “Whilst living in the south east myself and my partner David undertook a programme of works on a couple of properties and it was whilst working on these projects that the seeds were sown for DJK Interiors. I decided to take advantage of a part time plastering course at the local college as we still had a lot of work to carry out and it seemed to be both a great idea and the perfect time to learn a trade.
“In time, friends began asking me to undertake plastering and decorating work for them too. They were aware of my design expertise and also sought advice about colour choices and materials to use so I offered to source materials such as paint and wallpaper as well as being hands on and carrying out the work for them. I began to gain more experience and this in turn gave me the confidence to believe I may have the beginnings of a unique business idea.
“A few years ago we relocated back to the North West and using the unique combination of plastering, decorating and design services I can offer to potential clients under the umbrella term interior finishing, DJK Interiors was born.
“It seems, when setting up a business and looking into the intricacies of what is required, the more questions one attempts to answer, the more seem to arise. I had already set up DJK Interiors when I contacted BVG but the idea of free business support, advice and mentoring seemed to be exactly the thing I needed to help me answer some of those questions.
“I attended a “Head for Business” course run by BVG and from there found out about other workshops and was introduced to my advisor Martyn White. We had a one to one and discussed marketing strategies, methods of accounting and ways to manage finances. Since our meeting I have also contacted Martyn by email to which he responded very quickly with the relevant feedback I needed.
“I’m sure I will continue to consult BVG in the future for support and advice during the growth of my business.”
